Westwood leads Masters, Woods close behind

The leader heading into the final round of The U.S. Masters shouldn’t surprise many of us who watch golf like a religion. Lee Westwood shot 68 in the third round at Augusta which moved him to (-12) under. Westwood holds a one stroke lead over Phil Mickelson (-11) and a four stroke lead over K.J. Choi and Tiger Woods who both are tied for third at (-8) under.

The 36 year old Westwood has over 20 European Tour victories to hang his hat on and finished tied for sixth at The U.S. Masters in 1999. Westwood has some stiff competition as the leader of The Masters heading into the final round of play have had a difficult time holding onto the lead. Last year Kenny Perry held the lead heading into the final round until Angel Cabrera and Chad Campbell caught up to Perry sending the match to a three hole playoff. As history shows Cabrera ended up winning his first U.S. Masters.

One player we can’t count out though is Tiger Woods who showed how lethal he still can be after birdies on 13, 14, 15, and 18 during his third round. Prior to his display of excellence on the back nine, Woods exhibited some inconsistency bogeying three of four holes early on in his round. I’m rooting for Tiger because golf needs him. Woods makes everything so much more interesting regardless of his personal life.

I didn’t forget about Phil Mickelson trust me. Lefty has two green jackets thanks to victories in (04 and 06) and is itching for another. In his third round he shot a 67 which is the third lowest round ever in Augusta’s rich 74 year history.

My money is on Mickelson but my heart wants Tiger. We will have to wait and see, but it will definitely be entertaining.
